Security firm RSA attacked using Excel-Flash one-two sucker punch

It has emerged that the underlying cause of RSA's SecurID gaffe was the recently-reported zero-day vulnerability found in Adobe's Flash Player.

The exploit, which used specially-crafted Flash embedding in Excel spreadsheets, was first reported on March 15 and has since been fixed. RSA was hacked sometime in the first half of March when an employee was successfully spear phished and opened an infected spreadsheet. As soon as the spreadsheet was opened, an advanced persistent threat (APT) -- a backdoor Trojan -- called Poison Ivy was installed. From there, the attackers basically had free reign of RSA's internal network, which led to the eventual dissemination of data pertaining to RSA's two-factor authenticators.

The attack is reminiscent of the APTs used in the China vs. Google attacks from last year -- and indeed, Uri Rivner, the head of new technologies at RSA is quick to point out that that other big companies are being attacked, too: "The number of enterprises hit by APTs grows by the month; and the range of APT targets includes just about every industry. Unofficial tallies number dozens of mega corporations attacked [...] These companies deploy any imaginable combination of state-of-the-art perimeter and end-point security controls, and use all imaginable combinations of security operations and security controls. Yet still the determined attackers find their way in."

What we'd like to know, though, is whether the attack on RSA was caused by Adobe's lackadaisical approach to patching Flash -- or was it the other way around? Was it the RSA attack that first brought the zero-day vulnerability to Adobe's attention?

Files to unbrick your Droid 3 are now available; grab them while you can

If you've picked up a Motorola Droid 3, and love to tinker with things, listen up -- files have surfaced that will allow you to restore your D3 to a "factory-like" state and, more important, recover a unit that won't boot up.  We have to be clear here -- this is not a standard stock .sbf file.  If you use these files, you will no longer be on Motorola's upgrade path.  This is for emergency use (or for hackers to fiddle with) only.

Now don't get scared off.  While nobody is 100 percent sure, it looks like this is a copy of the software that Droid 3 soak testers were using, and it was pulled back for some reason or another by Verizon and Motorola.  They aren't some files cooked in a random hackers basement, they are signed by Verizon with production keys.  The only known drawback to using them is that you'll not be likely to get a future OTA update because you're running the wrong version -- which beats the heck out of a bricked phone you can't use. 

Like all things Motorola, they might not be valid links forever.  If you love your Droid 3 enough to dig inside and try to break it, go grab them and squirrel them away for a rainy day.  Visit the source link and read all the details, and if the day comes when you need them, you're covered.

Adobe unveils new software tools, adds iOS-compatible streaming video option

At the International Broadcasters Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam yesterday, Adobe unveiled a slew of new software solutions, including Adobe Pass, Flash Access 3.0 and Flash Media Server 4.5. Pass allows cable operators and other content providers to provide streaming TV from multiple sources through a single sign-on solution, while Access is content protection platform that can now deliver streaming video to mobile devices. But, it's Media Server 4.5 that has been garnering the most attention from the press, thanks to its support for iOS. Now don't get too excited, you still can't actually use Flash on your iPhone. But, the latest version of the software provides the option to stream video using the Apple-friendly HTTP Live Streaming format. So, still no Kongregate for iPhone users, but partners like MediaPlatform can now put live webcasts on your iPad. Check out the PR after the break.

Interlocked is a three-dimensional brain teaser

Back when I was a kid, I used to love crafting ornate puzzle boxes out of Lego. There would be just one way to open the box, by carefully shifting and rotating a bunch of pieces. Well, either that, or breaking the box in frustration.

Interlocked takes that spirit and turns it into a beautiful Flash game. It's a good thing the soundtrack is soothing, because the game itself can get pretty frustrating.

At the start of each level, you're presented with a box built out of blocks in different colors. You can click and drag the mouse to rotate the box any which way. Once you decide you want to shift a part of the box, hit SPACE to switch into "move" mode. You can then click any part of the box and drag it. Of course, you can only move a part as long as nothing is in its way. So it becomes a matter of understanding how the box is built, and what parts you need to move around so you could eventually take the box apart.

It's a tricky, difficult game, but it's a great brain teaser -- and definitely a keeper.

AOL And Yahoo Merger? Two Dogs Don?t Make A Right

Reports are coming out that AOL is talking to Yahoo's bankers about merging the two companies in the wake of Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz getting canned. We have an independent source who confirms discussions are happening, but it is not clear how serious they are. If a deal does go through, the likeliest scenario would be Yahoo acquiring AOL, with Tim Armstrong becoming the new CEO. (Disclosure: AOL owns TechCrunch). While a combination of AOL and Yahoo is always an option, with the main advantage being that it solves Yahoo's leadership search problem if Armstrong becomes the CEO, it is not a particularly good option. Two dogs don't make a right (at least in the eyes of Wall Street).
